Days 1–3: Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is a good place to settle into your first few days in Malaysia, with lively neighbourhoods, familiar landmarks and plenty of local food to discover. Explore KLCC and Bukit Bintang, then visit Batu Caves and the city's heritage landmarks, including Chinatown and Central Market.
Keep your arrival day flexible and enjoy getting to know the capital before continuing to Penang.
Days 4–6: Penang
Continue to Penang by domestic flight or take the ETS train to Butterworth, followed by a ferry to George Town. The island offers a change of pace, with UNESCO-listed heritage, traditional shophouses and a food scene worth exploring.
You can discover George Town's multicultural landmarks on a heritage walk, then spend part of another day exploring The Habitat on Penang Hill for rainforest trails and elevated walkways. With 3 days on the island, there's also time for hawker favourites, neighbourhood strolls and independent exploring before flying to Kuching.
Days 7–8: Kuching and Semenggoh
Kuching's riverside setting makes it an inviting first stop in Sarawak. Spend your arrival afternoon around the Waterfront and nearby streets, with time to try local favourites such as Sarawak laksa and kolo mee.
The following day, visit Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and explore more of Kuching. At Semenggoh, a short forest walk leads to a designated viewing area, where orangutans living within the protected reserve may appear during scheduled feeding sessions. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the visit offers insight into the centre's conservation efforts.
Day 9: Bako National Park
Bako National Park is known for its rainforest trails, mangroves and coastal scenery. It is also one of Sarawak's best-known places to look for proboscis monkeys in the wild.
A boat journey along the coast takes you to Bako, where you can explore its rainforest trails and look for wildlife on a guided walk. Return to Kuching after the tour, leaving the evening free before your journey to Mulu.
Days 10–13: Gunung Mulu National Park
Gunung Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its limestone formations, vast cave systems and rainforest biodiversity.
One way to explore Mulu is to combine its famous show caves with the Pinnacles trek. Begin with Deer Cave and Lang's Cave, with a chance to witness the bat exodus at dusk. The following day brings visits to Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave before continuing by longboat and on foot to Camp 5 for a 2-night stay.
Day 12 brings the demanding Pinnacles climb, involving steep terrain, ladders and rope sections. The following day, a 9 km rainforest trek leads back to Kuala Litut before returning by longboat and transferring to Mulu Airport. Depending on flight schedules, continue to Miri or Kuching for an overnight stay before travelling home.
Day 14: Departure from Kuching or Miri
If flight schedules allow, travel to Kuching or Miri after completing your Mulu tour on Day 13. Spend the night there before continuing your journey home on Day 14, connecting through Kuala Lumpur if needed. Be sure to check that your flight from Mulu aligns with the tour schedule before finalising your plans.
Planning Tips for Your Trip
- Flights and connections: Check Penang–Kuching and Kuching–Mulu flights early. Airfares to Mulu are not included in the Pinnacles package, so confirm suitable arrival and departure times.
- National park visits: Book Bako and Mulu experiences in advance. The Pinnacles trek has strict safety cut-off times, and Camp 5 offers basic shared accommodation.
- Weather: Rain can affect rainforest activities and boat transfers. It's worth checking Malaysia's weather patterns by region when choosing your travel dates.
- Travel documents: Sarawak has separate immigration controls. Keep your passport or relevant ID accessible, and bring a photocopy for Mulu park registration.
