About Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Discover the wild heart of Borneo within Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Sabah's largest protected area, spanning over 122,000 hectares of rich lowland rainforest. Established in 1984, Tabin is a vital sanctuary dedicated to conserving Malaysia's diverse and endangered wildlife.

The reserve is particularly famous for the mineral-rich Lipad Mud Volcano, which acts as a natural salt lick, drawing a variety of animals from the surrounding forest. This makes Tabin an exceptional location for observing wildlife, including the iconic Borneo Pygmy Elephant, Tembadau (Banteng), various primate species, elusive wild cats, and hundreds of bird species in their natural habitat.

Important Notes

Resort Enhancement Notice (April - December 2025):

  • Please be advised that Tabin Wildlife Resort is constructing a new Mud Observation Tower near the Lipad Mud Volcano area from approximately late April 2025 to late December 2025.
  • Construction work is scheduled daily between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
  • While work occurs along a section of the trail to the mud volcano, safety measures are in place to minimize disruption and maintain guest access. You may encounter some related activity during work hours.
  • This exciting upgrade will replace the existing tower and further enhance the wildlife viewing experience for future guests. We appreciate your understanding during this improvement period.

Getting There & Transfers:

  • Required Airport: You must arrange flights to/from Lahad Datu Airport (LDU) to connect with this tour. Please ensure your flight timings align with the scheduled transfers.
  • Scheduled Transfers (Included):
  • From Lahad Datu Town/Airport to Tabin: 8:00 AM / 12:00 PM
  • From Tabin to Lahad Datu Town/Airport: 1:30 PM (approx. arrival 3:00 PM)
  • Transfer Punctuality: Departure times are approximate. Please contact the operator (details on your voucher) if your scheduled transfer is significantly delayed.

Booking & Tour Details:

  • Payment: Full payment via SabahTravel.com is required to confirm your booking.
  • Tour Basis: This package operates on a shared (join-in) basis, including guide and transfers.
  • Private Tours: Private arrangements may be available upon request (subject to availability and additional fees). Please enquire when booking.
  • Wildlife Sightings: Tabin is a wild environment. While sightings are common, wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
  • Itinerary Changes: Your safety is priority. The Tour Operator reserves the right to alter itineraries, timings, or routes due to weather, safety conditions, or other factors beyond control.

Accommodation & Taxes:

  • Check-in/Check-out: Standard check-in is typically 2:00 PM, and check-out is 12:00 PM, but may vary slightly.
  • Tourism Tax (TTX): Non-Malaysian tourists are required to pay a Tourism Tax of MYR 10 per room, per night, directly to the resort upon check-in/out. Malaysians & Permanent Residents (with valid MyKad/MyPR) are exempt.

Other Information:

  • Personal Belongings: Please keep valuables secure. SabahTravel.com and the Tour Operator are not liable for loss or damage to personal items.
  • Tipping: Optional, but appreciated for good service from guides and staff.
