Sabah has received an encouraging message from the US Embassy, which is inviting Americans and visitors from other countries to explore the Malaysian Borneo destination following improvements in security.
US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires to Malaysia David Gamble linked the invitation with eased travel advice and said other countries were reviewing their advisories.
He spoke after launching Freedom 250 Sabah at the state library in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. The campaign commemorates the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Travel Advisory Changes Earlier in the Year
The US eased its Eastern Sabah advisory in February 2026. Malaysia is currently rated Level 1, meaning normal precautions. The US advisory retains Level 2 for islands and maritime areas off Eastern Sabah between Kudat and Tawau due to kidnapping risk.
Four months after the US revision, Japan lowered its advisory for coastal areas from Kudat to Tawau from Level 2 to Level 1. Pulau Banggi and Pulau Balambangan were included in that change.
Travellers can use their own government’s current guidance alongside information about their chosen destinations when making holiday arrangements.
