There's something magical about spotting an orangutan among the treetops of Borneo. Perhaps it's the unmistakable reddish fur against the green canopy, or the sight of a mother moving through the branches with her little one clinging close.
Seeing these remarkable animals in Malaysia is an experience worth planning for, and where you choose to go can make all the difference.
Where Can You See Orangutans in Malaysia?
Orangutans are native to the rainforests of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. From accessible conservation centres to remote rainforest destinations, here are 4 of the best places to see them.
| Location | What to Expect | From | Duration |
|---|
| Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Sarawak | Semi-wild orangutans at scheduled feeding sessions | Kuching | Half Day |
| Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sabah | Active rehabilitation centre with feeding platforms and outdoor nursery | Sandakan | Half Day |
| Kinabatangan River, Sabah | Opportunities to spot wild orangutans on river cruises | Sandakan | 2–3 days |
| Danum Valley, Sabah | Wild orangutans in a protected rainforest | Lahad Datu | 3–4 days |
Semenggoh vs Sepilok: What's the Difference?
Both centres offer opportunities to observe orangutans in protected forest environments, but they play different roles in orangutan conservation. These differences also shape what visitors can expect during their visit.
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Sarawak
Located approximately 24km from Kuching, Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is home to semi-wild orangutans and their offspring within a protected forest reserve. Established in 1975 as a rehabilitation centre, it later transferred rehabilitation activities to Matang Wildlife Centre as its orangutan population grew.
During scheduled feeding sessions at 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, visitors may see orangutans emerging from the forest for supplementary food, sometimes accompanied by their young. The orangutans are also free to forage elsewhere.
For travellers staying in Kuching, it's easy to fit a visit to Semenggoh into a half-day outing, with hotel transfers, entrance fees and an English-speaking guide included.
Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sabah
Established in 1964, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre continues to rehabilitate orphaned, injured and displaced orangutans within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.
Visitors can observe free-ranging orangutans at the feeding platforms and watch younger orangutans practising their climbing skills at the outdoor nursery.
Feeding and nursery visiting times:
- Feeding sessions: 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily
- Outdoor nursery (Saturday–Thursday): 9:00 AM–12:00 PM and 2:00–4:00 PM
- Outdoor nursery (Friday): 9:00–11:00 AM only
Located about 40 minutes from Sandakan, Sepilok sits beside the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. It's possible to visit both centres and Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary on a full-day tour.
For those travelling from Kota Kinabalu, staying in Sandakan or Sepilok is generally more practical than attempting a day trip.
Where to See Wild Orangutans in Malaysia
Unlike conservation centre visits, wild orangutan encounters in Sabah have no scheduled feeding sessions. Sightings depend on the animals' movements through the rainforest.
Kinabatangan River, Sabah
The Kinabatangan River is one of Sabah's best-known wildlife destinations, with opportunities to spot wild orangutans among the trees along its banks.
Wildlife cruises usually take place in the early morning or late afternoon, when guides scan the riverside forest for movement. Orangutans are among the animals visitors hope to encounter, alongside proboscis monkeys, hornbills, crocodiles and, occasionally, Bornean elephants.
Staying at a riverside lodge allows time for several cruises and different wildlife encounters. For a mix of conservation and wild orangutan encounters, pair a visit to Sepilok with a Kinabatangan River safari, which includes river cruises and riverside lodge accommodation.
Danum Valley, Sabah
For a more immersive rainforest experience, Danum Valley Conservation Area offers the chance to encounter wild orangutans in one of Sabah's protected lowland rainforests.
Located inland from Lahad Datu, Danum Valley is home to orangutans, gibbons, hornbills and other rainforest wildlife. Guided forest walks take you beneath the dense canopy, where orangutans may be spotted resting or feeding high among the branches.
A stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge offers guided walks, canopy activities and more time to explore the rainforest, with accommodation and transfers from Lahad Datu included.
When Is the Best Time to See Orangutans in Malaysia?
Orangutans can be seen throughout the year, but sightings are never guaranteed. At Semenggoh and Sepilok, fewer may visit feeding platforms when natural food is abundant, while wild encounters depend on the animals' movements and forest conditions.
Allow time for more than one wildlife outing where possible. During your visit, keep a respectful distance from the animals and follow the guidance of rangers and wildlife guides.
